The Cherry pickers!

This is our Cherry tree up near the house in our little garden. In years past, we have had maybe one or two cherries to eat from this tree. Last year we dug up the lawn and put shingle down instead and in doing so, cut though a few of the tree roots. Now I don't know if the root pruning is the cause of this but..............this year we have bunches and BUNCHES of Cherries!!!We have Cherries coming out of our ears! All our neighbours and friends and family and anyone else we can think of has had bags and bags of Cherries and we ourselves are all Cherried out!!! (-:Being quite a stumpy kind of person (5ft 1 inch and a bit), I was having trouble with the picking of the Cherries, so I employed my 6ft 3 inch husband for the job. He's quite a useful bloke to have around sometimes! (-:He was doing quite well stretching up for the nicest ripest ones............but eventually a chair had to be employed too.....We tried a step ladder but that was too large to get under the tree properly, so the top most Cherries, we have left to the Blackbirds. I've tried to get photos of the Blackies gorging themselves but haven't managed it yet.The tip of the iceberg! One small picking......we've tried to calculate how many Cherries we've had so far and reckon well over 30lbs. Amazing!Of course Poppy (sometimes called Poppadom and in this weather Flopadom) was a great help! I'd offer my blogging friends some Cherries only as you're mostly from foreign parts, I don't think they would travel well! The thought was there though. (-:

Oh Jenny a nice fresh Cherry Pie would taste delightful, wish I could stop by and help harvest. My tall drink of water is 6'4" tall husbands do come in handy at times!

Jenny, I think the exceptional harvest is a due to the right weather conditions ...but the root pruning may have had some effect.

Jenny we want to be there! Country Husband loves cobbler or pie with heavy cream...I know, it's really bad but so good! It could be a blogger get-together and eat cherry whatever. We could give Poppy Cat scritches and check out the pond...I am 5'3", CH is 5'9" we could help!! Help EAT THE CHERRIES!!!!!!

...thank you for that thought. Your cherries look delicious! Well...I think you must have gotten all of our cherries. Every year our tree is filled with them, but this year nary a one! I have no idea what happened. Love Flopadom resting in the garden.

You have some gorgeous fruit! I'm so happy for you. We live in cherry country and I can't wait for the season to start. A couple more weeks, I think.

Oh yes, meant also to say that the growers here prune their trees heavily.

Hi Jenny,
Hummmm they look delicious!!! I would have like to taste them, for sure!!! I hope you enjoyed them very well and I guess you did

Hi Julie, ah but how tall are you, that's the question! (-: Cherry pie is a good idea, thanks!

Hi Frank, I think you're right, we probably didn't get a hard frost when the blossom was on and it's been not a bad summer so far...

Hi RR, I would love to have a blogger friends get together, tho it's a bit far to come for a Cherry party! (-: I think we should all descend on Evie when I eventually get over to visit her. Flopadom likes her scritches!

Hi Julie, I'm very sorry I nicked all your cherries! (-: We are enjoying them very very much thank you!

Hi A & S, we've been bowled over with how many cherries we've had this year and yes they are delicious!

Hi Christine, happy cherry munching in a few weeks time, do you do anything special with them or just munch them fresh. That's what we've been doing. I shall have to look up how to prune them properly so that this happens again next year! (-:

Hi Chris, thanks, yes we've really enjoyed them, specially as they've come from our own garden and I know they haven't been sprayed with anything nasty!

HI CHRIS!! I had to yell cause you're way up there! What a beautiful crop Jenny! That is quite an interesting story to tell. Give Floppy belly rubs for me...if it's safe! I love the picture of the cherries on the chair. Good eating, if I know you you will come up with some outstanding recipe! Take a picture!

Hi Evie, Chris says Hi back, tho he was a bit breathless due to lack of oxygen...
Floppydom likes a belly rub, not like our old KT cat.
I'm going to disappoint you now and say that I haven't done anything with these cherries except stick them in my gob! (-: Because it was such a surprise, and we don't usually get many cherries, I don't have a tradition of any recipes or anything and they're mostly gone now.....maybe next year I shall ask for some inspiration before they ripen!

Nice of you to offer, even if we can't get them :-) Those look great! I can remember picking cherries as a child and also having to sit under the trees all day with a gun to keep the birds out. My first bird watching days had nothing to do with enjoyment and a lot to do with violence...sigh. I didn't even like cherry pie back them, but I do now. Poppy looks so cute. I have a tall husband, too and it is a definite advantage when you are only 5'2" and can't reach anything yourself.

Hi Jen, I often listen to gardening show on the radion on the way to Whyalla and they say that you have to stress a tree top get lots of fruit. so it was the root damage that did it. I'm not that keen on cherries, so I'm happy for you to keep them....now if it was a plum tree..........
