I finally got reasonably close to a Grey Heron at my local Rodden Reserve, only because he flew in close to where I was standing. We played a waiting game between us as I'm sure he was aware I was there. I stayed stock still for about 20 minutes, but in the end, he decided to fly off to another part of the Reserve and I managed to get a couple of shots. It's a shame it didn't stay nearby to hunt for food. Maybe another time. (click to enlarge)
I also saw my 99th bird species for Rodden Reserve the other day. It was a lone Greylag Goose. He didn't stay long though. By the time I'd walked round the Reserve, it was gone. I wonder what my 100 bird will be?

That new camera is looking extremely promising Jenny and these photos are excellent :-) The D7100 is as you say a big step up from the old D40X but I'm sure you'll soon get to grips with it :-)

Hi Tim, I agree that those two are the best of the batch. The last is a little soft, the Heron was just going behind some vegetation in the foreground.
Hi Jenny I can see you are going to have lots of fun with your new toy and you already have some great results. I have a soft spot for Herons, I love how they just stand and wait and watch so patiently.
