I looked it up in my recently acquired book Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland. The drawings are by Richard Lewington and I can't praise them and the book enough. I thoroughly recommend it.
The Vapourer moth is apparently very common though this is the first one I've ever seen. I guess I haven't been looking for moths that long! This is a male as the female has only rudimentary wings and is flightless and is a light grey-brown in colour.
As this moth was resting on my window I was able to get a nice photo of its underside as well.

What a beauty!
May I ask a dumb question. How do you upload your photos so that they do not link to another copy. (There is no hyperlink) That's probably badly worded.
Awesome Jenny!! That was very good of him to land on the window!
OH I love the new header...I just love the teasle in the forground!
I love that underneath view! Don't usually get to see that side.
Hi Alan, I'm not sure what you mean. When I'm doing a post, I do the writing bit and then click on that square at the top to add a picture. I then have to 'browse' and find the appropriate folder in my documents, click on that, 'open' and then click 'upload photo'. Then click 'done' that is all I do, I don't know how to be able to make a photo large by clicking it. If you can tell me, that would be great.
Hi Eve
Yes, he was very obliging. I keep looking out now for more moths doing that but haven't had any more so far.
Hi Mary
I was so chuffed to get that view, just a different perspective!
Hi Jen
Thanks for the book recommendation.
Scary eyes on the wings.
Thanks for that. Yes that's what I do. If I upload a large picture, blogger automatically makes a small version (400 pixels wide) which links to the larger one. Problem for me is that If I upload a small photo it still makes a link to another copy of the small photo. Yours on the other hand do not link to anything which is what I sometimes want to do.
I hope that makes sense. Anyhow, thanks for telling what you do. I will figure it out somehow.
